Mestaria Gallery Presents “The Future Of The Past” By Magnus Gjoen

Mestaria Gallery is proud to announce its upcoming exhibition, “The Future of The Past,” featuring artworks from the acclaimed contemporary artist Magnus Gjoen. Running from 26th September to 16th October 2024, this exhibition invites visitors to explore the delicate balance between history and modernity, as envisioned through Gjoen’s unique artistic lens.

Magnus Gjoen, a London-born artist with Norwegian roots, has developed a distinctive style that fuses street art influences with pop culture and fine art techniques. His work reimagines symbols and themes from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, offering a fresh perspective that challenges traditional views on beauty. Gjoen’s art encourages viewers to find beauty in unexpected places, often transforming familiar imagery into something entirely new. After studying fine art and fashion design, Gjoen honed his creative vision during a successful career with Vivienne Westwood, where his exposure to fashion further fuelled his desire to push artistic boundaries. This unique blend of influences eventually led him to fully dedicate himself to contemporary art, where he continues his innovative infusion.

The Future of The Past showcases Magnus Gjoen’s visionary approach to art, exploring the connections between traditional and contemporary styles. His work juxtaposes contrasting elements, merging timeless classical pieces with futuristic aesthetics to create a dialogue across different eras. In this exhibition, Gjoen highlights his remarkable ability to reinterpret traditional motifs through a contemporary lens, offering viewers a fresh and delightful fusion of familiar themes, transformed into something entirely new. His pieces reflect on the evolving relationship of time and perception.

Among his works, “You and I Are Earth” stands out, inspired by the idea of the heart expanding beyond its constraints, symbolising growth and emotional depth. Another notable piece, “The Morning After The Night Before,” modernises old scenes by integrating contemporary elements, creating unexpected contrasts between stillness and life. This painting invites viewers to explore the aftermath of an event, playing on focus and movement, where the eye is encouraged to constantly shift and rediscover different objects.

Magnus Gjoen’s “The Future of The Past” at Mestaria Gallery transports viewers across timelines, challenging the thought of what was, what is and perhaps what could be. This masterful manipulation of time brings the future into the past making this exhibition a notable highlight in Dubai’s vibrant art scene.
